Learning how to bleed and balance radiators is one of the most useful skills a homeowner can pick up, and summer is the perfect season to sort it out. Bleeding a Radiator, Step by Step

Bleeding is a job most people can do themselves in a few minutes per radiator, and it is worth doing across the whole house rather than just the one room you have noticed. Turn the heating on first so the system pressurises and you can feel exactly which radiators have cold patches, then switch it off and let everything cool before you start. Working on a cold system means the water that comes out will not scald you.

Find the bleed valve

It is the small square nipple at the top corner of the radiator. You need a bleed key and a cloth or small container.

Open the valve a quarter turn

You will hear a hiss as air escapes. Hold the cloth ready and do not open it fully.

Close it when water appears

Once a steady dribble of water replaces the hiss, the air is out. Close the valve snugly, not overtight.

Check and top up the pressure

Bleeding lowers boiler pressure. Refill via the filling loop to around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when cold.

Balancing: The Step Most People Skip

Bleeding gets the air out, but it does not fix a system where some rooms roast while others never warm up. That is a balancing problem. Radiators closest to the boiler naturally grab the most hot water, so the far and upstairs rooms are left with whatever is spare. Balancing sets each radiator to take a fair share of the flow, so the whole house heats at a similar rate and the boiler does not have to run flat out to warm the coldest room.

It is done using the lockshield valve, the plastic-capped valve at the opposite end of the radiator from the temperature dial. An engineer measures the temperature drop across each radiator, usually aiming for around eleven or twelve degrees between the flow and return pipes, and adjusts each lockshield until every radiator matches.
