Low boiler pressure is one of the most common heating faults we are called out to, and the summer is when many homeowners first spot it. With the heating switched off and the boiler running only for hot water, that little gauge on the front of your boiler often gets ignored until the shower runs cold. What Boiler Pressure Actually Means
Your boiler and radiators form a sealed loop filled with water. For that loop to heat your home properly, the water inside has to sit under a steady amount of pressure, measured in bar on the gauge at the front of the boiler. Most modern combi and system boilers are happiest sitting between 1 and 1.5 bar when the heating is cold, rising a little as the water warms up and expands. If the needle drops below about 1 bar, the boiler often decides it cannot run safely and shuts itself down.
It helps to picture the gauge as a fuel dial for the sealed heating circuit. A reading in the green band means the loop is full and the pump can push hot water round your radiators. A reading in the red or near zero means water has escaped somewhere, and the system no longer has enough to work with. Because a slow drop is normal over many months, an annual check during a boiler service is the easiest way to catch a genuine problem before it leaves you cold.

Why Your Boiler Pressure Keeps Dropping
A one-off small drop over a year is normal and nothing to worry about. The problem worth investigating is pressure that falls again within days or weeks of being topped up, because that means water is leaving the sealed system faster than it should. The two usual culprits are a leak somewhere in the pipework or radiators, or a failed expansion vessel inside the boiler that can no longer absorb the water as it heats and expands.
Leaks are often small and easy to miss. A weeping radiator valve, a pinhole in a pipe under the floor, or a slightly loose joint can lose enough water over a week to drop the pressure noticeably, all without leaving an obvious puddle. Another common cause is a leaking pressure relief valve, which lets water trickle out of a small copper pipe on an outside wall. If you have topped up more than a couple of times recently, a boiler repair visit will trace exactly where the water is going.
Bleeding radiators is another simple reason for a temporary dip. Every time you release trapped air from a radiator, a little water comes with it and the pressure falls slightly, which is completely expected. How to Repressurise Your Boiler Safely
Topping up boiler pressure is one of the few heating jobs that most homeowners can safely do themselves, using the filling loop fitted under or near the boiler. It is worth learning, because it can save you a cold morning while you wait for an engineer. That said, if you are at all unsure, or the pressure will not hold, it is always fine to call us instead. If the pressure holds after a top-up, the earlier drop was probably a one-off, perhaps after bleeding a radiator. If it falls again within days, resist the temptation to keep topping it up, because you are simply flushing fresh water and oxygen into the system, which encourages rust. At that point the sensible move is to have the cause found and fixed. When to Call an Engineer
Topping up once or twice a year is normal and nothing to lose sleep over. You should call an engineer when the pressure drops repeatedly, when it will not rise at all despite opening the filling loop, when it climbs too high and forces water out of the overflow pipe outside, or when you can see damp patches, dripping valves, or water near the boiler. These point to a leak or a faulty part rather than simple air loss.
A failed expansion vessel is a good example of a job that needs an engineer. When it fails, the pressure swings wildly, sitting low when cold then shooting up and pushing water out of the safety valve when hot. Recharging or replacing the vessel restores stable pressure, but it is not a home fix.
